A summer full of outdoors and adventure – who could ask for more!? With age-appropriate activities that include swimming, hiking, kayaking, paddle boating, zip lining, mini golf, basketball, volleyball, and more, Spruce Lake has everything a kid (or parent) could want. Kids ranging in age from 5-18 can enjoy the endless activities, awesome counselors, kind and dedicated staff, and clean facilities. And with two distinct programs, you can rest easy knowing that your children are learning, growing, and having fun in a supportive and wholesome environment.

Day Camp begins June 10th and runs for 11 weeks through August 23rd. Children ages 5-13 can expect to enjoy a full day’s worth of awesome (and exhausting) fun! Playing games, exploring nature, crafting, and taking weekly, off-site trips while making new friends will be on your child’s agenda. Each week will be new and exciting with weekly themes, like Christmas in July, Inside Out, Pig Week, SOAP week, and more. New this year, Spruce Lake will be offering a special TEEN program for kids ages 13-15. This program will include high adventure activities on-site AND off-site!

The Day Camp program is designed to help kids develop good character and recognize their importance in the family, community, and world, all from the context of a biblical worldview. Plus, before care, aftercare, and shuttle services are available. There are over 10 shuttle stops available from Lake Ariel to Stroudsburg, Tannersville, Swiftwater, Mt. Pocono and Pocono Lake.

Summer Camp, also called Wilderness Camp, is a sleepover camp for ages 7-18 with Mountain View, Spruce Lake’s new Youth Activity Center, at the heart of all the action! Mountain View will be the hub for all activities and worship firesides all summer long. Plus, it houses their brand new auto-belay Climbing Wall! While at camp, the campers are always on the move and the counselors are there to keep the kids engaged with activities, water games, adventure courses, zip lining, and more. Campers will even get to experience a new waterslide opening this summer!

Spruce Lake is located nearby. Want to check it out first? Spruce Lake’s Open House is a great opportunity to learn more about all they have to offer year-round. Read more about the upcoming Open House on Sunday, June 2nd in this issue.

Have young performers or children interested in imagination and role-playing in your house? Then S.T.A.R.S. Summer Camp at Shawnee Playhouse is the place to be this summer. The Shawnee Theatrical Arts Resource School (S.T.A.R.S.) offers a platform for children to explore their natural gifts of imagination and role-playing. Through theatre arts, children sharpen their creativity, improve their communication skills, gain self-confidence, and learn the importance of teamwork. But, above all, children enjoy becoming a part of the magic that they create on the stage.

The S.T.A.R.S. program is an introduction to many aspects of theatre through stage movement, dance, music, art, creative games, role-play, and scene study. Young performers will learn about acting, theatre etiquette, terminology, costuming, and makeup. The campers will then join the staged summer production and be in a performance that coincides with the camp that they are in.

This summer the campers will participate in some exciting productions that your whole family will enjoy. Each week concludes with a 7pm performance. Check out the 2019 summer schedule.

For over 20 years, Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) has been running a summer day camp in the beautiful Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. In addition to eleven miles of trails, a picturesque waterfall, and two placid ponds, PEEC has the countless wonders of the National Park to discover, from the Delaware River to the Appalachian Trail.

This year, PEEC is offering 8 weeks of exciting themes for campers. Campers can learn about the ancient geologic history of the park and visit beds of fossils five hundred million years old or a museum about modern mining during “PEEC Rocks” week. They will learn about the more recent human history in the park, from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans to Dutch settlers and the farmers of the twentieth century during “History Hunters” week. During “Water World” week, campers of all ages can make new aquatic friends, and older campers can take a leisurely paddle around the ponds in kayaks or canoes. Campers will learn about the incredible diversity of native plants and animals in their natural habitat in “Biodiversity Bash” week. For artsy campers, “Art in Nature” will provide plenty of opportunities for up-cycled and repurposed crafts along with a trip to Luna Parc in New Jersey for inspiration. Discover the magic nature has to offer during “Salamanders and Spells” week, when campers can make their own wands, see rescued native animals in a show by Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, and maybe even meet a real dragon!  Campers can learn the essential (and not-so-essential) skills of living in nature, like building shelters, making camouflage, and even using a bow and arrow during “Wild Child Challenge” week.  Plus, all of PEEC’s counselors have their own unique talents, skills, and specialties, which they will pass on during “Counselor’s Specialty” week.

Older campers have the opportunity to stay at PEEC for residential camp. For 5th to 7th grade Junior Naturalists, “DEWA Adventures” week will take them to all of the best sites around the park while staying in PEEC’s cabins every night. 8th to 10th grade Senior Naturalists can go on a day-long river paddle and an overnight backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail accompanied by expert staff.

New this year are two “Tike Hikes” weeks, where young campers can bring along a special adult for half-day adventures during “Salamanders & Spells” and “Wild Child Challenge” weeks.

PEEC camp runs Monday through Friday, July 1 through August 23, rain or shine, from 9:00 each morning to 4:00 each evening.  For an additional charge, transportation is available to and from Milford in the mornings and evenings, and before- and after-camp care is also available as early as 8:00am or as late as 5:00pm.  Financial assistance through camperships and grants based on need are available on a first come, first served basis and can cover part of camp tuition.

Stephanie Sherman-Barr and Nathan Lanan, the camp directors, as well as the entire PEEC camp staff, are more excited than ever for camp this year!  Whether campers are joining for the first time or coming back for their tenth season, there’s always something new to experience at PEEC!
